The relationship between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and cannabis is a rather interesting one. Where large concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol (known for its psychotropic affects) is often tied to fits of anxiety, paranoia, and disturbed sleep, it is well-documented that CBD found in the cannabis plant can actually help counteract these affects and lead to reduced anxiety! With such evidence being revealed, a group of Brazilian researchers further investigated the relationship between SAD and CBD. Their research revealed that CBD (without any THC content) can provide a treatment for people with anxiety or related problems! For more information regarding CBD, let’s take a look below:

What Is Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)?

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), also called “Social Phobia” is one of the most psychiatric disorders and common form of anxiety in general. It affects approximately 12% of Americans in their life time and by definition is linked to feelings of intense fear in one or more social situations. Not only does this cause considerable stress, but it also leads to the impaired ability to perform vital daily tasks.

Surprisingly enough, these fears are usually triggered by actual or perceived scrutiny from others. For some, this only happens in specific situations, like when they are around people who they don’t trust, but others may have to deal with this anxiety constantly and face issues communicating with other people. Some of the symptoms of social anxiety include:

  • Physical symptoms of anxiety, including diarrhea, upset stomach, muscle tension, blushing, shaking, sweating, pounding heart, shortness of breath, and dry mouth.
  • Intense anxiety in social situations, experiencing tingling or numbness in hands or feet while communicating with others.
  • Avoidance of social situations, due to panic or fear.

The Relationship of Cannabidiol and SAD

According to the study conducted by the Brazilian researchers, it was revealed that 10 people with a diagnosis of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) using CBD benefited from reduced anxiety and feelings of fear. The CBD helped in easing negative thinking patterns and mood swings, especially when consumed on a regular basis. The researchers also used functional neuro-imaging to gauge the amount of blood flow in various parts of the brain to note the effects of CBD.

These neuro-imaging results revealed that patients with SAD and their brains had more calm and relaxed responses. This means, the Cerebral blood flow after consuming CBD points to anti-anxiety (anxiolytic) effects in areas of the brain that are known to control emotions. After receiving an oral dose of 400 mg of CBD, patients of the first and second session were also known to be treated completely after a certain amount of time.

However, while the results of this study appear to be promising, many scientists have suggested that the same size of 10 participants is to less to indicate CBD and its effects on Social Anxiety Disorder. As a result, in order for the drug to be publically administered in the future, numerous studies have to be conducted in the future to determine its ideal dosages.
