The NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently received an open letter from one concerned football fan. The question was not in how the game is played, but on the effects it has on the health of the athletes not only in the short term but also long term. Though a great game, the chances of these athletes developing Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is high even with the helmets as they offer no protection against the consequences of repeated concussions which over the course of the years can only lead to the development of CTE. Though there are also other mild injuries like orthopedic injuries which heal over time.
Likewise, Cannabidiol (CBD) as a medicine has grown exponentially, especially in regard to it is neuroprotective. It is being sought as a medicine because it is both an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant and it is free of psychoactivity. It is a very promising development, but the kind of research that will be necessary to establish this as a general medicine useful preventively in patients who are more likely to develop any kind of brain trauma will await funding that is not yet there. But the NFL pockets are deep enough to support a crash research program like this. This leads us to believe CBD just might be showing up in NFL player’s treatments.
